Today, Kristin and I were joined by my "soon-to-be-sister-in-law", Nikki. Now Nikki is an inspiration herslelf! She is on the "Couch to 5K" plan, walks daily, does her run/walk training, bowflexes a few times a week, and hikes! She wanted to come along even though I gave her fair warning about this particular climb. I think she enjoyed it.....and I think she might be a little sore tomorrow!
Just when we made it to the top and felt like super-human athletes, along comes a jogger. Cheery and full of energy. Giving US the thumbs-up. After running the entire hill. And backtracking to run parts of it OVER AGAIN with her husband who was lagging behind. Whatever.
Speaking of inspiration - early on in the trek, we came across an older gentleman with his cute little "granddog". He was resting and reveling in the natural beauty of the canyon. We stopped and chatted (partly to give Nikki an excuse to rest, this was her first time afterall!), and learned that he had had heart surgery not too long ago, had recently started walking and lost 40 pounds! He has lived beneath these hills for years and never climbed up the canyon. Today was going to be his day! He had only made it about a 1/3 of the way so far. We wished him well and moved on, thinking he would probably head down soon. We made it to the top, we touched our fence post (we're a little OCD that way), and started to head back down. Who do you think we spotted shuffling along but our dear friend, the old bad heart guy. He made it!!! He called his wife and sent her some pictures from his phone of the incredible views. We were all really excited for him.
